CD Projekt Red announces The Witcher remake built in Unreal Engine 5

We’ve got some exciting news for Witcher fans! The developer of the Witcher series, CD Projekt Red, has just announced that it will remake the original Witcher game in Unreal Engine 5. The developer revealed that it would work with the game studio Fool’s Theory to make this happen.

The news was announced on The Witcher’s official Twitter account. The company cautioned the fans, saying, “We want to do this right, so please be patient — it’s gonna be a while until we can share more details.

A few weeks ago, CD Projekt Red announced on Twitter that they had been working on multiple new projects. The Witcher remake, originally codenamed Canis Majoris is one of them. The company stated that The Witcher remake would be built from the ground up using Unreal Engine 5.

The Witcher is where it all started for us, for CD PROJEKT RED. It was the first game we made, ever, and it was a big moment for us then. Going back to this place and remaking the game for the next generation of gamers to experience it feels just as big, if not bigger,” CD Projekt Red’s Head of Studio, Adam Badwski, said in an official blog post.

Richard added,Collaborating with Fool’s Theory on the project is just as exciting, as some of the people there have been previously involved in The Witcher games. They know the source material well, they know how much gamers have been looking forward to seeing the remake happen, and they know how to make incredible and ambitious games. And although it will take some time before we’re ready to share more about and from the game, I know it’ll be worth the wait.

The original Witcher game was released more than 15 years ago, in 2007. The game was based on the fantasy book The Witcher by Andrzej Sapkowski. The Witcher is the franchise that put CD Projekt Red on the map.

Polish studio Fool’s Theory, established in 2015, has a good track record. The game studio previously contributed to projects like Seven: The Days Long Gone and Baldur’s Gate III. It is currently working on a new IP codenamed Vitriol.

After suffering from Cyberpunk 2077’s launch disaster, CDPR wants to play it safe and take as much time as they need before releasing The Witcher remake.

We still don’t have any official news about when the remake will come out. The Witcher remake is expected to release on PC, PS5 (possibly PS4) and Xbox Series S/X.
